In Praise of Julia Child & The Well-Cluttered Kitchen

by Steffanie Cameron | Build Direct Blog | April 29, 2013

Ahh, the French Chef. For many, the arrival of the 1963 PBS series was a doorway into a whole new world.

In 1948, Julia Child, was stationed in post-war Paris with her husband, and little did she know then, but she’d change America’s cuisine forever in the years to come.

She spent much of the next decade writing Mastering the Art of French Cooking, the cookbook that would introduce French cooking to “servantless American cooks” once published in 1961.

By then, she had returned to America to settle down with her husband in Massachusetts. Upon getting the word that her book was being published, there was no looking back for the towering dame who’d dominate the food scene for the next four decades.

Julia Child’s Kitchen

The quaint rural kitchen became the most famous kitchen in America, so, fittingly, at the turn of the 21st century, the Smithsonian Museum adopted it as a permanent exhibit, almost completely intact with the chef’s collection of over 800 knives and endless tools, and, yes, those incredible pegboards.

Last weekend, I was kind of wistfully dreaming I could live Julia Child’s life and cook in her kitchen. I blame Nora Ephron, rest in peace, thanks to her delightfully fun movie Julie & Julia. The DVD extras came with a long feature about the Smithsonian’s adopting of Julia’s kitchen when she decided to move into a retirement community at the end of her life. It was a passionate tribute to a legendary kitchen, and I watched it rapt.

Today, kitchens often look almost sterile. So clean and clear of clutter. It feels almost like kitchens are meant to be seen but not used.

My Dream Kitchen

No one could ever have accused Ms. Child of that sin of kitchen neglect. Everywhere, pegs and clips and hooks were filled with tools and pots and pans. Her kitchen was to cooking what a master carpenter’s tool shed is to his woodworking mastery: A place for everything, a tool for every job, with instruments displayed so you simply reach out, grab it, and work.

Looking at Julia’s well-cluttered kitchen, one can’t help but think there isn’t a designer alive who’d put that kitchen in a showhome today, and yet it would be my dream kitchen, and I imagine I’m not alone.

Julia Child didn’t live to eat, she lived to cook. And then eat. And then cook some more. The woman had a mirror and a makeup drawer in the kitchen, for when guests would call, because she spent so much time in there!

Toward the end of Ephron’s film, you see Julia and Paul assembling that famous kitchen upon moving into the house. Paul armed with a Jiffy maker, outlining pots and tools on these walls covered with a carpenter’s pegboards, so they’s always know where the pot was supposed to hang.

Between that, the endless drawers, the knife slots on her butcher’s carts. the magnetic strips filled with knives, and the knick-knacks that made it feel like home for her, the kitchen was a place meant for work, for creating amazing foods, and for sharing them with the world, and we’re all the better for her single-minded passion.

Life Happens in Kitchens

I’m no Julia Child, but I’ve taught people to cook for a living in the past, and I believe there is no more valuable nor rewarding skill one can learn in life. Nothing beats being able to walk into your kitchen and make incredible braised chicken, or serve your lover an eggs Benedict on Sunday morning, or whip up the best cake ever for your kid’s birthday, or just cook yourself a killer steak when you want a quiet Friday night catching up on your PVR.

When you can do it for under $10 in ingredients versus shelling out $40 in a restaurant, you bet it’s a quality-of-life skill that makes you happier in heart and mind. And providing that tasty joy for others is even more rewarding, as Julia spent a lifetime teaching us. Cooking can be done with a minimum of tools, but someone who loves to cook doesn’t just have tools – they burst at the cupboards with spices and sauces and condiments and all kinds of pantry ingredients. There are books, squeeze bottles, weird utensils, and more that we need to truly excel in the kitchen.

Show me an empty, clutter-free kitchen, and I’ll show you a homeowner that doesn’t cook. But show me a cluttered kitchen that’s poorly organized, and I’ll show you a cook who burns more than their fair share of dishes.

Organized Clutter is Good

If any one room should have some organized clutter, it’s a well used kitchen of a passionate chef. Looking around Julia Child’s hub, one instinctively knows there’s not a dish in the world that Julia wouldn’t have had the tools to cook.

In today’s global-village world filled of fusion foods, international ingredients, and a more savvy dining public, you’d think our kitchens would be getting more cluttered with awesome instruments, not less.

Don’t be afraid to fill your kitchen with tools of the trade. If Julia could do it, so can you.

Maybe, just maybe, through the utilitarian-yet-loving tribute to her tool-heavy kitchen at the Smithsonian Museum, Julia Child will continue teaching us the glory of cooking, and the greatness of a well-cluttered kitchen, for years to come.

Thanks for the memories, Julia!

Easy Green: 23 Ways to Reduce Waste at Home

by Laura Gaskill | Houzz Contributor

We all know that growing landfill mass and, sadly, even trash floating out at sea are real issues, but it can be hard to know where to start if you want to make a difference. Thankfully, it’s actually quite easy to cut way down on your household trash by making tiny changes in your shopping habits and daily routines. If you would like to reduce the amount of trash your household creates but are not quite sure how to do it, these 23 tips can help. They are all easy to implement and can add up to a reduction in waste that makes a difference.

Living Room and Entertaining

     1. Switch to digital downloads of movies and music if you haven’t yet.

     2. Ask for and give consumable or homemade gifts. Think event tickets, dinner reservations and edible treats.

     3. Stop junk mail and paper bills, and cancel subscriptions that you don’t read.

Bedroom and Wardrobe

     4. Be picky. By choosing to buy only what you love and know you will wear, you can slim your wardrobe and love it more.

     5. Shop vintage.

     6. Bring cloth shopping bags of your own… even to the mall.

     7. Mend and tailor instead of toss. Take a cue from our grandparent’s generation and work with what you have.

Kitchen

     8. Buy soap in bulk and decant it into reusable containers.

     9. Keep lots of cloth towels on hand instead of paper.

    10. As long as it is relatively clean, you can reuse aluminum foil several times.

    11. Give old clothes and linens a second life – cut them up and reuse them as cleaning rags.

Buying Groceries

    12. Shop farmer’s markets, produce stands and natural food markets – you will find the freshest and most local food that’s minimally packaged.

    13. Avoid buying single-serving packages. Pick the larger containers instead.

    14. Keep plenty of reusable bags around. If you have trouble remembering to bring bags, try keeping stashes of them in your car, by the front door, in your office and anywhere else they might come in handy.

Dining

    15. Use real dishes and cloth napkins every day.

    16. Try an alternative to plastic wrap. Place a plate on top of a bowl to store leftovers in the fridge or purchase reusable dish covers.

Pets

    17. Our pets don’t ask for much, but that doesn’t stop us from wanting to buy them all sorts of things. Keep things simple and stick with a few favorite toys and accessories.

    18. Buy your most frequently used pet supplies in bulk to cut down packaging.

Bathroom

    19. Simplify your beauty routine – fewer products means less waste.

    20. Use microfiber cloths instead of paper towels for cleaning.

    21. Buy the biggest packages of toilet paper you can find to reduce packaging.

Downtime

    22. Make friends with your public library. If you haven’t explored your local library lately, consider giving it another look and borrow a book, movie or music CD instead of buying.

    23. Rethink leisure time. Relax in your backyard, cook dinner for friends, walk in nature, go for a bike ride, have a picnic or read a book – from the library!

NEW! Karran Black Acrylic Sink **EXCLUSIVELY** on display at American Cabient & Flooring, Inc.

Since the early 90’s, Karran Sinks have been an industry leader in innovation when it comes to the kitchen sink and have always looked at different ways of doing things. When other companies where only putting top mount sinks into laminate countertops, Karran figured out how to undermount a sink seamlessly into any laminate countertop. Producing and distributing kitchen and bathroom sinks is what Karran does. Whether it is the stunning new Edge Series of stainless steel sinks, or the tried and proven Karran acrylic sinks; Karran understands how to make a sink that functions beyond expectation, yet is visually appealing and inspiring.

10 Popular Home Design Trends | Timely or Timeless?
10 Popular Home Design Trends, Timely or Timeless?
by Samantha Schoech | houzz.com contributor

It’s hard to know what’s going to stick and what’s going to go down in history as the next macramé plant holder. Interior design trends come and go and come again, to be sure. In the ’50s, people ripped out Victorian details and claw-foot tubs in favor of vinyl and plastic and elements with the sleek, modern aesthetic of the atomic age. in the ’70s and ’80s, Danish modern pieces and other icons of the ’50s were eschewed as symbols of a stuffy, bygone era. Now they are sought-after treasures with giant price tags.  In the last decade, we’ve seen some new decorating trends emerge. Some will have staying power, and some will go down with macramé plant hangers. We may see them in 20 years and think, “That is so 2012.” But which is which? I have my predictions. What are yours?

Moroccan Poufs: I am a huge fan of Moroccan poufs. They are great extra seating. They are great foot rests. They are both exotic and modern, and they come in a rainbow of colors. They’re modern looking, but with just the right amount of flourish. Not too sleek, not too busy. And they go with any decor: Modern – Traditional – Boho – Eclectic.  But are they here to stay? I’m not sure.

Woods Wallpaper: This beautiful and serene pattern hit its apex in about 2010, when it was absolutely everywhere. It’s simple, symmetrical and classic. But that may have been what whoever put up the wallpaper of cartoonish bathing ladies in my childhood bathroom thought.

Mid-Century Modern Wallpaper: I love wallpaper, and I love the big, graphic patterns inspired by mid-century designs. But they’ve already done their comeback circle and I’m betting that in a few more years they are going to fall out of favor again.  In 1990 no one would have put this in their home. Now everyone is. What about in 2025? Same goes for mid-century textured wallpaper. Trend.

Mid-Century Starburst Mirrors: A starburst mirror is to my mom what a salmon and seafoam room is to me: a design trend from my youth that now seems horribly misguided. She cannot imagine why anyone would want this in a home. But many, many people do want starburst mirrors in their homes. You see them in all sorts of different styles. Does that make them a classic or are they just enjoying one last moment of favor?

Mid-Century Everything: All the mid-century design icons have made a huge resurgence in the past decade: Eames, Saarinen, Nelson, and Bertoia. You can’t turn around without hitting your shin on a Tulip Chair. Mid-century modern design had real beauty and a very recognizable aesthetic. It is grounded in the philosophy of its time, which sought a sleek simplicity and an integration with the outdoors. The ideas and designs of that time will never fade away. But the trend of creating a period-piece room will. We will always have Danish modern and Nelson lights, but I don’t think there will be quite so many rooms that look like Mad Men sets in 20 years.

Butterflies: Butterflies are the insect of choice for everything from little girls’ rooms to sophisticated dining rooms. In the early aughts it was birds; now it’s butterflies. Nature never goes out of style, and we’ve been stealing its designs since we first wrote on cave walls. But will butterflies scream “2012” in five years?

Old Globes: These are another staple of modern, eclectic design. Just try to score a cheap out-of-date globe at a garage sale. There is no such thing, such is the demand. Old globes do have an innate loveliness. They are bright and round and colorful. They represent exploration and mystery. But will the old globe’s current ubiquitousness be its undoing? Ten years from now, will you be able to score one at a garage sale for next to nothing?

Fake Taxidermy: This is another big one in eclectic modern design. It’s funny and winking and ironic – very much a product of the time. But animal heads fashioned out of cardboard, plaster and ceramic have a limited shelf life.

‘For Like Ever’ Posters: Already dated. They were just too popular for their own good. It’s always possible that they will make a nostalgic comeback in 20 years when all the children of today recall them from their childhoods. But they will never be a classic.

Wall Decals: They are great for people who can’t or don’t want to commit to wallpaper. And they are certainly a lot less expensive than art. But does the wall decal mural have a future? I think wall decals might be here to stay for short-life rooms like nurseries, but their best days are behind them for adult spaces.

Elle Decor's "Big in 2013" | TopShop News

Elle Decor’s | BIG IN 2013

TREND: Lots of Brass

With its rich gleam and sculptural weight, this metal is experiencing a resurgence. With so many designers looking to the ’70s, it’s inevitable that brass and bronze will show up more – from accessories by Carl Aubock to cocktail tables by Gabriella Crespi to virtually entire rooms by Kelly Wearstler, brass is the metal of the moment.

TREND: Green

Pantone named Emerald the Color of the Year for 2013, but we’re seeing all shades of greens and expect more in the future, from bright spring greens to olives, and especially lots of different blue-greens and teal.

TREND: Embellished Walls

We expect this trend, already strong, to continue at full strength. The options now are limitless, from simple grass cloths to hand-painted papers to coverings embellished with glass beads and crystals.

TREND: Lace

Your grandmother’s tablecloth is now hip. Already big on the runways, lace is showing up in the home collections of Zara and H&M, so you know it’s ready for its close-up. Count on seeing lots more see-through in the months ahead.

TREND: Beige

A surprise, but it’s showing up more often, and in quieter room settings. The danger here is going corporate bland, but very talented designers are using a variety of shades of cream, off-white, and yes; beige in a variety of textures to create serene settings. This could be the start of a backlash against all the vivid colors and layered rooms we’ve been seeing for the past few years.

Happy & Safe Holidays from all of us at American Cabinet & Flooring

Holiday Home Improvement Projects

The run-up to the holiday season is a good time to be taking care of home improvement projects. Friends and family will be dropping by a bit more frequently, so they’ll be able to see the fruit of your labors.

Even if your home isn’t a major social setting, if you’re like most of us, you tend to spend a bit more time indoors in the winter, so you might as well be making the most of your home for the people living in it: you!

Seal the driveway and fix those cracks in the sidewalk
Salt on the roads and frequent temperature changes can break down your entrance-ways. Make a good impression on the outside of your home and avoid curious looks from guests thinking “was that crack always there?”
Home theater area
You’ve got a big screen television and a great sound system, but what about the stand that the TV rests on? How about the decor? You may want to look at custom cabinets or storage for your DVDs and related items. Is the couch your guests will be sitting on looking a bit worn? Upgrade and replace as needed. You may also want to consider mounting your flat screen television on a wall for more effective use of space and a sophisticated look.

The kitchen: the most used room in the house
When you’ve got company over the holidays, even if the main event may be in the living room, people naturally gravitate towards the kitchen for an extra cup of cocoa or a gingerbread cookie from the pantry. Think about new cabinets, solid slab countertops or a coat of paint that brightens up the room & can create a welcoming feel. And if you’ve upgraded your kitchen utilities like your dishwasher, you’ll have an easier time after the party is done.

Bathroom fix-ups
New tiles and re-grouting can add a fresh look to your bathroom. Maybe it’s also time to add little touches like a new mirror, shower curtain or bathroom mat.

Designer fireplace and maintenance
A lot of holiday parties tend to center around the fireplace. Custom fireplaces that double as art installations are becoming more popular. More homes are also including them in other parts of the house besides the living room, such as in the kitchen or master bathroom. If installation is a bigger job than you were thinking and you’ve already got a working fireplace, at least get your maintenance done, cleaning it up, checking connections and ventilation and ensuring cracks in the mantle or other areas get sealed properly.

Give yourself a home improvement schedule
You’re not going to want to deal with dust and packaging from home improvement projects while your guests are arriving. Give yourself plenty of time to work through your improvements, and don’t bit off more than you can chew. Give yourself a realistic list to accomplish and if you can’t get it done before New Year’s Eve, well, there’s always next year!
